Blog post #1. This is exciting! I started packing for Rome today. I've been doing a lot of shopping to make sure I have enough walking shoes and casual basics. Now the challenge is getting it all to fit into one and a half suitcases. I always over pack for even the shortest of vacations, but somehow I feel like I can't possibly over pack for a trip that's lasting four months.
Packing is both terrifying and exciting. I guess it's starting to sink in that I'm really leaving- and that this is my last week in this country. I get this mixed emotion of leaving so much behind, yet there is so much to see ahead of me. I will miss my friends and family tremendously, however this is not something I'm going to sacrifice just because I'm a little homesick. There are times when I'm just so excited that I'm ready to drive to the airport at that very moment, and then there are times where I feel like I'm not quite ready to leave yet. It's silly, I know.
I can't wait to travel through Italy and Europe. I want to experience everything. (this sounds like my application essay) "When in Rome, we shall do as the Romans." A much as I want to do all of the touristy things and sight-see, I'm really looking forward to sitting at a cute little cafe with a good book on a warm day in the heart of Rome. I'd like to practice my Italian with the locals and get used to living in an authentic Italian apartment. It's going to be quite different than what I'm used to, and I'm okay with that. Sometimes, change is good.
before I end this post, I wanted to close with some of the places in Europe that I'm just dying to visit while I'm abroad. Other than the cities in Italy that I'm traveling to on field trips with the school, I want to make sure I hit Paris, Amsterdam and Switzerland the most. I'd love to squeeze in Germany, Spain and Prague if my schedule (and budget) allows. I guess four months from now I can go back to this post and see which places I actually did hit.
Until next time!
